Backend Engineer (MTA), Core Sending

This role sits at the heart of a high-scale email delivery platform, responsible for building and operating the core infrastructure that powers transactional and marketing email sending for millions of developers worldwide. You will work on deeply technical systems that ensure messages are delivered reliably, efficiently, and safely across complex global networks. The environment is highly distributed and performance-critical, requiring strong ownership of backend systems that handle routing, retries, and delivery optimization at massive scale. You will contribute to the evolution of modern email infrastructure, shaping how sending behavior is controlled, observed, and improved. Working closely with engineering and trust teams, you will help design systems that balance performance, reputation management, and abuse prevention. This is a high-impact role for engineers who enjoy solving deep infrastructure challenges in a remote-first, fast-moving organization.

Accountabilities:

• Build and operate core email sending infrastructure, including SMTP delivery systems, routing logic, retries, and backoff mechanisms to ensure reliable message delivery at scale.
• Design and implement systems for throttling, IP management, domain reputation, and provider-level sending controls to optimize deliverability.
• Improve classification and handling of delivery outcomes such as bounces, deferrals, failures, and successful sends.
• Develop observability and debugging tools that help engineers analyze delivery behavior across customers, domains, providers, and infrastructure layers.
• Collaborate with Trust & Safety teams to build systems that prevent abuse and protect sending reputation.
• Participate in incident response and support on-call operations for critical sending infrastructure.
• Contribute to architectural decisions that improve reliability, scalability, and operational excellence of the email platform.

Requirements:

• Strong backend engineering experience building or maintaining large-scale, high-throughput distributed systems.
• Experience with or strong understanding of messaging systems, queues, workers, retries, rate limiting, and idempotent processing.
• Familiarity with email infrastructure concepts such as SMTP, MTAs, DNS, IP pools, bounces, and deliverability behavior.
• Proficiency in backend development, ideally with experience in TypeScript and/or Go.
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, and system simplicity in production environments.
• Experience working in high-responsibility environments with on-call duties and incident response.
• Strong ownership mindset, low ego, and ability to work independently in a remote-first team.
