This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Researcher based in Brazil.

This is a high-impact conservation science role focused on advancing the understanding, protection, and long-term monitoring of jaguars and their ecosystems across the Guiana Shield. You will lead regional efforts to consolidate fragmented ecological data and transform it into actionable insights for conservation planning and biodiversity policy. The role combines advanced research, large-scale data harmonization, and field-based ecological work across multiple countries and stakeholder groups. You will collaborate with governments, NGOs, Indigenous communities, and scientific institutions to build a unified regional knowledge system. This position plays a critical role in improving how jaguar populations, habitats, and prey species are studied and protected at scale. It requires both scientific leadership and strong coordination skills in complex, multi-country environments. The work is highly field-oriented, collaborative, and directly tied to global conservation impact.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of harmonized regional databases on jaguars, prey species, habitats, and human–wildlife interactions across the Guiana Shield.
  • Coordinate multi-country data consolidation efforts, including data cleaning, quality control, integration, and reporting to national focal points and partners.
  • Organize and facilitate regional stakeholder workshops to define data-sharing frameworks, database architecture, and long-term governance structures.
  • Design and standardize ecological and field data collection protocols, including camera trapping, DNA sampling, GIS mapping, and socio-economic surveys.
  • Oversee and coordinate field campaigns across Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana in collaboration with local institutions and Indigenous communities.
  • Lead capacity-building initiatives, including national training workshops, technical mentoring, and support for emerging researchers and local institutions.
  • Produce scientific publications, policy-relevant reports, and knowledge products, including contributions to regional conservation strategies and connectivity planning.
  • Develop and support the implementation of accessible digital platforms and tools to enhance data sharing and long-term usability of conservation data.
  • Requirements

    • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in wildlife ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, or a related field.
    • 7–10+ years of experience in ecological research, biodiversity monitoring, data management, or conservation science.
    • Strong track record of scientific publications, ideally focused on large carnivores, jaguars, or ecosystem ecology.
    • Proven experience leading multi-country, multi-stakeholder conservation or research initiatives.
    • Expertise in ecological data systems, including database design, GIS, remote sensing, camera trapping, and DNA-based monitoring.
    • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with governments, NGOs, research institutions, and Indigenous and local communities.
    • Familiarity with global biodiversity frameworks such as CBD, CITES, CMS, and related conservation agreements is highly desirable.
    • Excellent communication skills in English; additional proficiency in Portuguese, French, or Dutch is a strong advantage.
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and cross-cultural collaboration skills, with a commitment to inclusive conservation approaches.
    • Benefits

      • Competitive compensation aligned with experience, location, and organizational framework
      • Long-term full-time position (minimum 4-year engagement)
      • Remote-based role with international fieldwork and regional travel opportunities
      • Opportunity to lead a high-impact, multi-country conservation research program
      • Direct collaboration with leading global experts, institutions, and conservation networks
      • Field exposure across diverse and ecologically significant regions of the Guiana Shield
      • Professional development through advanced scientific research, publications, and policy engagement
      • Work contributing directly to global biodiversity conservation and species protection initiatives.
