Senior Software Engineer (Security & Privacy)

You will join a mission-driven engineering environment focused on strengthening the security, privacy, and resilience of one of the world’s most widely used knowledge platforms. In this role, you will design and deliver security-focused features that protect users, editors, and critical infrastructure at global scale. You will work closely with product, engineering, and security specialists to build robust defenses against abuse, bots, and evolving cyber threats. The position involves hands-on development within a complex, high-traffic web ecosystem that demands strong performance and reliability standards. You will also contribute to improving authentication systems, security architecture, and privacy safeguards across core platform components. Operating in a transparent and collaborative culture, your work will directly support a global community of contributors and users.

Accountabilities:

• Design, develop, and implement security and privacy-focused features within large-scale web applications
• Contribute to the protection of platform integrity by building defenses against abuse, bots, and malicious activity
• Collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure secure architectural and implementation decisions
• Review, develop, and deploy security-related enhancements across core platform systems
• Conduct security and privacy reviews, including internal and external assessments of systems and features
• Support incident response efforts related to application security and privacy issues
• Identify, analyze, and remediate technical debt in security-critical components
• Improve system reliability, testing practices, observability, and operational excellence
• Participate in code reviews and promote secure coding practices across teams
• Break down complex technical challenges into actionable engineering tasks and deliverables

Requirements:

• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with exposure to security or privacy engineering
• Strong experience in modern web application development (backend and frontend)
• Proficiency in PHP and JavaScript is beneficial, with ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly
• Experience building or contributing to secure software systems or privacy-focused features
• Understanding of secure design principles, threat modeling, and vulnerability mitigation techniques
• Experience with code reviews, system reliability practices, and production system support
• Ability to design technical solutions, write design documentation, and support implementation planning
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain security risks to non-technical stakeholders
• Experience working in distributed, remote, and cross-functional engineering teams
• Nice to have: experience with anti-abuse systems, MediaWiki, open-source contributions, or large-scale backend systems
