Sr. Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Backend Engineer based in Mexico.

This role offers the opportunity to build and scale backend systems that power complex booking, payment, scheduling, and customer-facing experiences.
You will work primarily with Elixir and functional programming while solving challenging problems across distributed systems and production environments.
The position combines strong engineering fundamentals with an AI-first approach to software development and problem solving.
You will take ownership of critical product areas and collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering stakeholders.
Your work will directly contribute to system performance, reliability, security, scalability, and overall product quality.
You will also help shape modern engineering practices by using AI coding tools, evaluating generated code, and developing effective human-agent collaboration patterns.

Accountabilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems using Elixir, with a strong focus on API design, data modeling, SQL, service reliability, and production performance.
• Take ownership of critical product areas and drive initiatives from technical conception through implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation.
• Develop backend services that integrate effectively with multiple products and systems while maintaining high standards for quality, security, reliability, and maintainability.
• Solve complex technical problems involving booking flows, payments, customer workflows, system performance, and large-scale distributed applications.
• Apply AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or equivalent technologies as an integral part of the software development workflow.
• Delegate appropriate development tasks to AI agents, review their output critically, identify flaws or risks, and course-correct solutions when necessary.
• Design and operate sophisticated agent orchestration systems and establish effective patterns for collaboration between human engineers and AI agents.
• Make sound system design decisions by evaluating technical tradeoffs, edge cases, scalability requirements, failure scenarios, and long-term maintainability.
• Participate in peer code reviews, automated testing, continuous integration, TDD, and other engineering practices that support reliable software delivery.
• Investigate and resolve production issues, contributing to system stability and continuous improvement.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and provide support for occasional production incidents outside standard working hours when scheduled.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering stakeholders to clarify requirements, challenge incomplete specifications, and develop effective solutions.
• Communicate technical decisions clearly, contribute constructively to technical discussions, and help colleagues overcome complex engineering challenges.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve development workflows, system architecture, engineering quality, and team effectiveness.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience using Elixir and/or Ruby, with strong professional Elixir experience required.
• Strong backend engineering fundamentals, including API design, data modeling, SQL, debugging, service reliability, and production troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated ability to design scalable and dependable backend systems that integrate with multiple services and products.
• Solid experience with relational and/or non-relational databases.
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals and the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for logic errors, security vulnerabilities, maintainability concerns, and production risks.
• Demonstrated daily or regular use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or comparable tools within a professional engineering workflow.
• Strong system design skills, including the ability to reason about scalability, failure modes, tradeoffs, edge cases, and architectural decisions.
• Experience with software quality practices such as peer code reviews, unit testing, continuous integration, and Test-Driven Development.
• Experience participating in an on-call rotation and willingness to assist with occasional production issues outside regular working hours when on-call.
• Strong ownership and self-motivation, with the ability to move projects forward independently, identify blockers, and remain accountable from conception through production.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly and work effectively with different perspectives.
• Adaptability and curiosity toward emerging technologies, engineering practices, and AI-assisted development.
• Nice to have: experience with Ruby, GraphQL APIs, RabbitMQ or other messaging queues, B2B software, booking platforms, or the travel and experiences industry.
