Staff Platform Engineer | Service Mesh

This role sits at the core of a modern cloud-native platform organization, responsible for enabling engineering teams to build, scale, and operate highly reliable distributed systems. You will play a key role in designing and evolving a global Kubernetes-based infrastructure, with strong emphasis on service mesh architecture and multi-cluster connectivity. The position focuses on reducing operational complexity through automation, platform tooling, and self-service capabilities. You will work with cutting-edge technologies in the CNCF ecosystem, contributing to a highly scalable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud platform. Collaboration is central, as you will partner with multiple engineering teams to define standards, improve observability, and drive platform adoption. This is a high-impact role where your work directly influences developer productivity and system reliability at scale. The environment is fast-paced, modern, and deeply engineering-driven.
Accountabilities:
- Design, build, and evolve a global Kubernetes-based platform on AWS with a strong focus on scalability, security, and cost efficiency.
- Lead the architecture and implementation of a multi-cluster Istio Service Mesh, ensuring reliability, observability, and performance.
- Develop Kubernetes operators and automation tools to enable self-service infrastructure provisioning for engineering teams.
- Improve platform observability through metrics, tracing, logging, and cost-awareness initiatives using modern monitoring stacks.
- Define and promote engineering standards, RFCs, and best practices across platform and product teams.
- Support engineering teams in adopting platform tools and ensuring smooth integration into their workflows.
- Continuously identify opportunities to reduce operational overhead through automation and infrastructure abstraction.
- Strong experience with AWS cloud services and Kubernetes in production-grade environments.
- Proven expertise in Istio Service Mesh, including design and management of multi-cluster architectures.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes internals and ecosystem tools (operators, controllers, CRDs).
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Kubernetes-native approaches such as Crossplane or custom operators.
- Strong background in observability systems (metrics, logs, tracing, alerting).
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Go, Python, or Ruby) for building platform tools.
- Experience in cloud-native environments with CI/CD, GitOps (e.g., ArgoCD, GitHub Actions), and automation practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a systems-thinking mindset.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills in English and Portuguese.
- CNCF certifications (CKA, CKS, CKAD) are highly valued.
